HEART VISION COACHING

How Coaching Differs from Therapy

Coaching differs from therapy primarily in the way coaching focuses on future goals, changes, and developments while supporting the client's own agenda. Therapy often focuses on reflecting on the past and understanding the why’s of personal cognition, emotion, and behavior.

In coaching, the client’s desires, beliefs, and values are centered in order to inform appropriate goals. Coaching does not follow a specific model or agenda but responds to where the client is, in the present. The coach partners with the client to understand the challenges or goals they have. Coaching proactively supports clients in skill building and goal achievement. Coaching does not follow a medical model, diagnose, or deliver treatment. High-risk needs (e.g. suicidal ideation, trauma, mood disorders, alcohol or chemical dependency, rape and abuse) are not appropriate for coaching services and should be referred for therapeutic evaluation and treatment.

Heart Vision Coaching was born out of a desire to create meaningful engagement and empower others to find growth, purpose, and accountability in order to live a meaningful life. Coaching with me is a proactive approach to development and goal achievement. Through the course of my study and clinical training, I developed a deep commitment to social justice, equity, and a holistic approach to individual and institutional health.

As a coach, I will be a safe space, thought-partner, and point of accountability for my clients.

I am trained to refer clients for therapy or treatment services, when appropriate.

HVC Mission Statement

  1.  I will continue to educate myself on issues of race, gender, politics, ethics, diagnoses, and best practices. I will continue my professional development as a coach by seeking out credentialed training and certification.

  2.  I will respect your personal experience as it relates to your intersecting identities.

  3. I will continue to acknowledge my own intersecting privileges and actively work toward challenging my own biases so that my clients feel safe.

  4. I will continue to question the use of diagnostic criteria and formal assessment measures for racial bias and pathologizing human reactions to trauma.

  5.  I will respect clients as the expert on their own experiences and lives. I will hold space to explore the clients agenda and not my own.

  6.  I will make outside referrals to community service providers when appropriate. I will not see clients for needs outside of my scope of practice.
